DUKE AT BRISBANE.

CROWD OUT OF CONTROL. ENTRY TO THEATRE BLOCKED* A. and N,Z. BRISBANE. ADril 7. While the Duke of York was on his way to visit the returned soldiers the police and military lost control of the crowd outside the entrance to the theatre. Even the plunging police horses were unable to quell the enthusiasm of the public. The Duke's car was unable to proceed. The Duke sat in it for 10 minutes while efforts were made to clear a way across the footpath, but they were of no avail. Eventually the car made as though to return to Government House and it proceeded by a circuitous route to the back entrance of the hall, and the Duke was enabled to keep his engagement. A redeeming feature of the unparalled episode was that no effort was made actually to mob the car, or even to mount on t'he running-board. The police used every device in their power, short of using their batons on the crowd, but they were completely powerless. The crowd was composed largely of women and girls, many of whom fainted, while others had to receive treatment at the hospital. The Duke left the theatre by the back entrance, and mado the return journey without incident.
