r/IKAFiANA CLUB'S EVENTS. RACE tO ARKLE'S BAY. SOME CLOSE FINISHES. The Aknrana Yacht Club held a series (ti[ cruiailig and harbour races on Saturday io.r yachts and launches. Tho bis keel yachts raced to Te Kume. near Coromaudel. ■while the smaller keel yachts, centreboard classes, includinK the 18ft. V-boats. and launches, proceeded to Arkles Bay. inces were held for classes M. S. 1 8,11 d . . y, and Star boats. Tho weather was ideal for yachting, a wholesail breeze from the fouth-west blowing throughout the afterjioon. Generally speaking the .racing was interesting and some close Cmshc recorded. Details are as follow: -« T: The race for classes A and B to Te 1"™ was sailed in conjunction.with the ' ■Jiew Zealand \acht Squadron, and resulted as follows:-Nga-Toa, 1; Victory, 2; Prize. 3. Tho finishing times were: Ami, 6h 17m, Nga-Toa, 6h 23m 455; Prize, .6h 27m loa, .Victory, 6h 30m 3s; Kotiri,. Gli 40m Bs, Stanji, Gh 47m 30s. Raweno did not finish. The eight competitors m class V were started at 2.35. Surprise crossing the line first, closely followed by Mystic. Wild Wave. Magic. Scud and Gannett. Mystic overhauled Surprise or. the lead d°wn the channel and tho finish was timed as follows:— Mystic, 4h 40m 20s; Surprise. 4h '42 m 35a; Wild Wave, -lb 4an 28s: Magic, 4h 48m 4s; Scud, 4h 58m 345; Solace. 5h 'llm 325: dannett did not finish. Result. iMyatic. 1; Wild Wave, 2; Surprise. 3. A GOOD START. Classes L and N made a fine showing as rthey crossed tho line, all within easy distanoe of one another. ISgaru II got the best of the start ana close to her camo Valeria. Kakoa. Winifred. Louisa. Wanna, Huia. Venus, Lucille, and Lovelight. , Valeria and Venus went into the lead >«n the rim down the channel, but tliey jvero both overhauled by Rakoa. which was She first boat to finish. Valeria led Venus for most of the course, but lust before leaching the bay Venus drew level with iVaJeria, both boats crossing tho line together, the judge being unable to separate tij The finishing times were:—Rakoa. 4h 51m 325; Valeria. 4h 51m 51s: Venus 4h 51m 51s; Huia. 4h 54m 7s: Lucille. 4h 54m 345; Waima, 4h 58m 8s; Winifred. 4h 68m 445: Ngaru 11., 5h 0m 17s: Lovelight. 5h 5m 4s; Louisa did not finish. Result: Lucille. 1; Huia, 2; Rakoa. 3. . Alexa got the best of the start m the race for the smaller keel yachts. Wairiki ■was second away and then came Dadyo Wilma. Mahoe and Naiad, the last-named being 35m late. Lady Wilma went into the lead early in tho race and was the first boat to finish. Tho times were: Ladyo Wilma, 4h 49m 40s; Alexa, 4h 50m 18s; Naiad. 5h 12m 355; Mahoe, 5h 14m 2(>s. Wairiki did not finish. Result: Alesa. 1; Mahoe, 2; Ladye Wilma, 3 The 26-footers were started with tho Keel yachts and when the gun fired Spray was in the lead, Esma was next away and came Starlight and Awatere in that order. Spray had a day to her liking and beat both Starlight and Awatere m. Ihe finishing times were: Spray. 4h 54m 495; Star - light, 4h 5Gm 445: Awatere. 4h 5Gm 595; Esma, 5h 4m 435. Result: Spray, 1< Awatere, 2; Starlight, 3. , Only Aurora started in ihe raco for class O, her finishing time beinj? 5h 9m. 2/s. Mirage, the other O class boat, got nipped by the tide and was unable to start. Kathryn I?, and Kirita were the only Btarters in the race for launches, the boats crossing the line in the order named. The finishing times were: Ivathryn R. 4h 3fim; Kirita, 4h 41m 10s. Result: Kirita, 1. , THE HARBOU'R EVENTS. The competitors in class M were Mollie, Matarere, Mawhiti, Manene and Maroro. The boats were sent away to a rather straggling start at 3.10, Matarere crossing the line first, followed by Maroro, Manene and Mollie in that order. Mawhiti, which had stood up the harbour waiting lor the start, was 3m 50s late. Matarere maintained her lead on both rounds of the course and finally won by 1m Gs from Manene. In the first round there was very little between Matarere, Maroro and Manene, a matter of 40a separating them as tiiey turned at the markboat. Hero Maroro, ■which was 20a astern of Matarere, fouled the markboat and gave up.. Mollie was 2m further away and Mawhiti 3m. Manene now occupied second position and maintained it for the remainder of the course. In the second round Mawhiti did exceptionally well and not only passed Mollie, but aIBQ closed I'P on Manene and Matarere. Had she started to time, she would have Bone very close to winning the race. The finishing times were: Matarere, 4h 38m 8s; Manene. 4h 39m 14b; Mawhiti, 4ii 40m 30s; •ilollie, 4h 40m' 40s. Result: Matarere, 1: Manene, 2: Mawhiti, 3. i The th.*ee star boats, Ola I\June and Moa, were sent away in tho order named. Ola IV. held her lead throughout and won lather easily. June . and Moa, however, made a close race of it. At tho completion of the first round Ola IV. led June by a minute, Moa, being 55s astern of June. In the second round Oia IV. increased her lead, while Moa caught and passed June, only 4s separating these two boats at the finish. The times wero: Ola IV., 4h 49m 40s, 1; Moa, 4h 51m 4Gs. 2; Juue, 4h 51m 60s, 3. The race for class S brought out six competitors, which were sent away in tho following order: Lancia, Atnngatai, Muru, Sea Sleigh, Namu, Tulip. Namu sot her spinnaker at the start, but it gaviii her a great deal of trouble, and she took it in. She gradually overhauled the leaders and finally headed the fleet. Ataiigatai proved very hard to shake off, and when the first round was completed Namu only had a l c:i d of 2;5s from her rival. Sea Sleigh was 45s further astern, and then cajno Tulip 3m further awny. In the second round Namu improved her position, while - Sea Sleigh ulso reduced the gap between herself and Ataiigatai. The finishing times were: Namu, 5h 7tn 30s; Atnngatai, 51i 10m 13s; Sea Sleigh. 5h 10m 255; Tulip, oh 18m 48s. Result: Sen Sleigh, 1: Ataiigatai, 2; Namu. 3. ?".!ru and Lancia did not finish. THE FOURTEEN-POOTERS. ■ The* start of the raco for classes T and N was a splendid one, Joan crossing the lino first, closely followed by Mearior, Iron- Duke, Mispah. Resolute, Dulcie, Marie, Yvonne and' Kismet. ■ Altnougti she got tho worst of tho start, Kismet made up a lot of leeway and took command before the markboat was reached. On the completion of the first round the times, were: Kianiot, 4h 21m 325; Joan, 4h 22m 325; Marie, 4h 25m; Ngaio, 4h 25m •30s; Resolute, 4h 25m 40s; Eleanor, 4h 28m 10s; Dulcie, 4li 28m 555; Iron Duko, 4h 31m 50s; Mispah, 4h 32m. In the second round Joan passed Kismet, while Iron Duke had to give place to Mispah. The finishing times wero: Joan, oil aim 495; Kismet. 5h 12iu 4s; Marie, 5h 34m 20s; Ngaio, 5h Mm 58s; Resolute, 5h 3.7 m 255; Eleanor, 5h 20m 50s; Dulcie, 5h 122 m 40s; Mispah, 5h 28m 9s; Iron Duke, £h 31m ISs. Yvonne did not finish. Result: .Marie, 1: Joan, 2; Kismet, 3. Class Y was started with classes T and 2C and when the gun fired Sea Gnome was the first of the Y boats to cross tho line. Next to her came Cupid and then Alerte, ■closely followed by Sea Breeze and Jupiter, •with Romp last. As usual, Cupid and lAlerte soon went into the loud and drew away from the other competitors. Alerte proved a little too good for Cupid in the ■first round, and when they passed the .markboat for tho second run to the sandspit she hnd a lead of Ira la from Cupid. n cn seconds further away came Sea Gnome. Jupiter, Sea Breeze and Romp followed some minutes later. Cupid did well in the second round and, overhauling Alerte, beat her "in" by 30b. Tho finishing times were: •Ctipid, 5h 9m ss: Alerte oh 9m 355; Sea <iiiomo, 5h IGm 4ls: Sen .Breeze, oh 17m 0a; •Jupiter, 5h 19m 355: Romp, 5h 32m. Result: Cupid. 1; Alerte. 2; Sea Bieese, 3. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB. RACE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP. The open championship of the Mauukau, jheld under the rules of the Mauukau Yacht Club, was decided oil Saturday in a fresh eouth-south-west breeze. There were four starters. . ' Mistral, Merry Jest, Limelight and Nyria (holder), winch got away in that order. Merry Jest ran into the lead, but carried awny a bobatay and Nyria went to the front. Mistral carried away her mainsheet and dropped well astern. At the first turn, Merry Jest, Nyria and Limelight rounded close together and Nyria ran into the lead us they started on ihe run back. However, she got into trouble in shallow water and grounded, the other two petting well awny. Mistral turned a few minutes Inter. The order at the second turn was Meirv Jest. Limelight, Nyria and Mistral, but the last-named then retired- These .Positions were maintained until tho finish, Merry Jest, being about 3in ahead of Limelight. with Nyria a length away third.
