SHIPS STRIKE WHALES.

MAUNGANUI'S EXPERIENCE. FORCED TO REVERSE ENGINES. NO DAMAGE TO STEAMER. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Monday. Twice within the last- few weeks the steamer Maunganui has struck a whale. The first time was on a recent trip between Sydney and Auckland just off the Three Kings. At 2 o'clock this morning while tho vessel was b->und from Sydney to Wellington, the look-out reported a slight jolt. On investigation it was found that the ship had run into a whale and the engines were reversed to clear the obstacle. The incident occurred between Stephens Island and the Brothers' light. No damage was (Jone to the ship. INJURED BY PKOFELLEES. REPORT FROM ZEALANDIA. A whale was struck by the port propeller of the Zealandia on the voyage from Hobart to Sydney last month, and the vessel trembled all over. The incident occurred at 11.10 a.m., 50 miles south of Gabo, and passengers saw a large area in the wake of the liner stained with blood. In it a large whale floundered half submerged. The third officer, Mr. Carrington, who ; was on watch at the time, said; it was possible that the whale had been forcibly drawn along the side of the ship,, but he was inclined to believe that the whale, half asleep, swam straight into the whirling bladen, three of which probably struck him. The Zealandia continued her .voyage and no serious damage was done.
