POSED AS DETECTIVE.
MAN WITH A BAD RECORD. ONLY ONE DAY OUT OF GAOL. Impersonation o! police officer was alleged against John Gibb Hastings ,in the Police Court yesterday. Accused was also charged with drunkenness. Sergeant Calwell said accused \yent into a house in Vincent Street about 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday everting. He followed a man into a room arid said lie was an acting-detective under the direction l of Chief-Detective Onmmings, and wished to search the room and also the man. When asked for a reason, accused said tjjie man had defrauded another of £1 5s in a hotel, but that if he handed the money over, the matter would he hushed up. The man was not deceived and communicated with the police. "Accused has a bad record," continued the sergeant. "He is a menace to society, and was discharged from gaol only on Monday." The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt': Yes, I see he has 20 convictions. What is the maximum fine for this offence? Chief-Detective Cummings: £SO, sir. The Magistrate: He will be fined £lO for impersonation, in default one month's* imprisonment:., and 5s or .24 hours' imprisonment for drurlkenness. Can you raise money to pay straight away? Accused: .[ can go straight, to a job. The Magistrate: No. You will take out the default.
