EPSOM GIRLS' SCHOOL.

GROWTH * IN TEN YEARS. WONDERFUL PROGRESS MADE. ACCOMMODATION QUESTION. The prize-giving ceremony of the Epsom Girls' Grammar School was held last evening in the hall of the boys' school in Mountain Road. The Governor-General; Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson, were prwent. Dr. E. Roberton, vice-chairman of the Board of Governors, who presided, said the school had increased wonderfully in numbers and now had as many pupils fs the parent school. The board realised that increased accommodation was needed and it hoped for relief in the school at Takapuna to be opened next year. He congratulated the head mistress, Miss A. C. Morrison, and the staff on the consistently good results achieved in examinations. In her report, Miss Morrison said the school began its tenth year by breaking all-records in growth and leaping up four grades in one bound. The number on the roll the first day ' was 612, of whom 281 were new pupils. At the beginning of the second term the number was 600 and in the third term 570. In spite of sickness the girls were to be congratulated on the work they had done. The Matriculation Course. • "I should like to draw the attention of parents to the ( fact that the course for matriculation now extends over four years, instead of three as formerly," Miss Morrison said. "This does not seem to be clearly understood, and girls are often urged to sit in their third year. The unwisdom of this is even more obvious whan we consider that with this year a new system of marking begins, which will have the effect of a raised standard, and also no partial passes are to be allowed in future. Thus it is unfair to both pupils and teachers to expect four years' work to be done in three and the premature attempt causes much strain on at a period of rapid development , during which strain should be avoided as much as possible," The Governor-General presented the scholastic prizes and Lady Alice Fergusson the sports' trophies. His Excellency said the leaving of school was a milestone in a girl's career. He urged old girls to take an interest in the school and exercise their influence for its good. At the conclusion Their Excellencies were cheered by the pupils. Deiaih ot the Prizes. Special -Prizes.—English Essay: Senior. D. E. Youngman; intermediate, D. J. Davis: junior. L. E. Utting.
