MOUNT ALBERT BOYS.

PROGRESS OF THE SCHOOL HOSTEL OPENS NEXT YEAR. SUCCESS ON CRICKET FIELD. "The school has now completed five years' work and can claim to have outgrown its youth, and to rank as one of the large senior secondary schools of the Dominion." Ample justification for these words by Mr. F. W. Gamble, the headmaster, could be found at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Mount Albert Grammar School last evening. Close on 500 boys clothed in navy shirts and shorts, gracing the fine school hall, which was being used for the first time for the prizegiving, were in themselves a proof of the rapid growth of the school. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Auckland Grammar School Board, referred to the progress made by the school. The hostel to be opened at Mount Albert after the holidays would be the first hostel attached to any Grammar School in Auckland and he hoped the Mount Albert boys would appreciate the honour. Popularity of Libraries. In i|js report, Mr. Gamble said the growtn in numbers had been very rapid, as shown by the opening roll of each year—2B7, 346, 378, 420, 509. lie spoke of the good work that was being done by the school libraries, both reference and lending, in cultivating the best instincts of the boys. The libraries were exceedingly popular. During the year just over 4000 books had been issued, an average ot 20 books for each subscriber. An important alteration was to be made in the school syllabus next year in the substitution of chemistry for certain branches of physics. .He considered the change should be one of great benefit to the boys. In ttie outdoor work a very high standard had been set. The first fifteen, after holding the senior secondary school championship for two years in succession, was compelled to surrender it to Auckland Grammar School last season. The summer school game, cricket, had always been good in the school, even in its first year, and during the last two years the eleven had won every game it had played in the championship matches.
