ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVINGS.

THE GIRLS' GRAMMAR SCHOOLS. CEREMONY AT HOWE STREET. INCREASE IN ROLL-NUMBER. CHANGES IN THE BOUNDARIES. The annual prize-giving ceremonies of the Auckland Girls' Grammar Schools look place yesterday. Their Excellencies the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson presented the prizes. , The function at the Howe Street school ■was held in the afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of pupils, parents and friends. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Auckland Gramusa.r School Board, presided, other members present being Dr. E. Roberton and Mr. J W. Ward Baker. Lady Alice Fergusson, j Miss E. M. Johnston, head mistress, and Miss M. Dive, first assistant, were presented with bouquets. The assembly hall was prettily decorated. In her report, Miss Johnston said the roll-number on March 1 was 559, 30 more than last year. The increase, was very satisfactory, in view of the fact that at tho beginning of 1926 the boundaries were still further narrowed. The school had had a very good year in spite of the ravages of influenza in the middle term and an epidemic; of mumps iu the third term. Tribute to Headmistress. Professor Thomas said they greatly appreciated the kindness of Their Excellencies in being present. Miss Johnston, the new headmistress, had carried out her duties with energy and he was sure she had endeared herself to her pupils. (Applause.)- Next year there would be changes owing to tho opening of a new school at Takapuna. One of thes difficulties that always confronted the board was the growth of the population and the consequent necessity for altering boundaries. He hoped parents would not think the board too hard when it had to change boundaries from time to time. The school at Takapuna would help to relieve pressure in the city. Professor Thomas said he realised some pupils did not get tho best advantages out of their, education. He urged that the energies of pupils should be directed into channels from which they -would derive the most, benefit. The girls should take the bast advantage of the opportunities •which the school offered them. The only satisfaction in work was the satisfaction of doing it well. The Governor-General then presented the scholastic prizes and Lady Alice Fergusson the sports' trophies. His Excellency gave a brief address in which he urged the guests to maintain the school spirit after leaving. Songs sung by the girls were , greatly appreciated. When Their Excellencies left, the Vice-Regal car passed through lines of cheering' white-clad girls.
