EDUCATION BOARD'S SITE. THE QUESTION OF RATING. T|be Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding." Acknowledgment of demands adjusting rates in connection with the subdivision of the old Newmarket School site was contained in a hitter from Messrs. Reed, Towlo and Cooper, solicitors, on behalf of the Education Board. It was statad that no demand could be recognised for sections remaining in the hands of the board, and a request was made that they should be withdrawn, as land held by the board was exempt from rates, A report was submitted to the council by the Legal and Finance Committee, recommending that the demands should not be withdrawn,, and that Jitfga.l opinion on the matter be obtained. The committee expressed the opinion that the unsold portion of the subdivision was liable' for rates,, as the board was holding the land for speculative and not for educational purposes. The committee's recommendation was adopted. On the recommendation of the Legal and Finance Committee, it was decided to issue 6f per cent, debentures in 'Connection with the supplementary loan of £1560. The Commissioner of Police wrote stating that it was not at present possible to give eny assurance that the existing arrangements regarding traffic control in the borough would be continued for a further period of 12 months. Consideration was being given to making of a uniform, charge throughout the Dominion. A letter was received from the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association asking the' council to make it compulsory for drivers of all motor vehicles to observe the off-side rule when meeting at intersections, lit was decided to reply j;bat a by-law had already been framed to this effect, and that jit would bo enforced when it became operative. The approval of the council wasi given to a suggestion by the Local Bodies Association for the formation of a representative transport committee in the No. 1 Motor-Omnibus District.
