DISCUSSION AT THAMES. PROPOSED PAEROA BUILDING. QUEST! ON OF AMALGAMATION. [BY cormspoxdekt. 1 THAM3S, Wednesday. At a meeting ,oJ the Thatpies Hospital Board two letters; w,e ; re leceived dealing with the payment of fees to the architect who had drawn u;p the plans' for the proposed hospital at Paeroa, the erection of which is now indefinitely postponed. The architect, Mr. Gillman, .-of Hamihon, also forwarded a claim for £344 14s in. .this connection. The chairman, Mr. W. E. Hale, moved that Mr. Gillman be offered £250, without prejudice, in settlement of the claim. Mr. Brenan moved an amendment to the effect that Messrs. Hale, Danby and himself he deputed to confer with Mr. Gillman, and endeavour to arrive at an amicable agreement, pending the erection of litie building. ' , Mr- Hale then withdrew his motion, and the amendment, was carried. The issue was later raised by Mr. Brenan, who said that as nothing further had been heard .in regard to amalgamation with Waihi, he would move that the Minister of- Health be asked for a final decision on this question, the delay over which was holding up the building of the Paeroa Hospital. Mr. Da.nby jsaid that while not doubting the Minister's wisdom in such matters, he thought that if the motion was carried the line of least resistance would he taken, and amalgamation quickly recommended. He would prefer the Minister to confer on the matter before arriving at » decision. Mr. Walton said the Paeroa project did not depend- upon stmalgamafcion with Waihi; the two issues were separate. He submitted that the discussion was out of order. M;r. Robinson contended thai; both questions were too much interwoven to be discussdd separately. Mr. Walton pressed his point, and the motion was ruled put of order. At Mr. Brenan's request, a letter was read embodying the following resolution passed at the October meeting: " That in view of the present financial stringency among the farming community, and of the uncertain position of the board in regard to amalgamating with the Waihi HoE.pital, the question of the erection of the Paeroa Hospital be deferred until the question of amalgamation be disposed of.'" Mr. Brenan then asked, how, in view of the board's letter, the motion could be out cf order. Mr. Parfitt then moved that the Minister be asked to preside at a conference between the Thames and Waihi authorities on the question of amalgamation. The motion was carried by six votes to th».
