OBITUARY.
MR. J. H. PRICE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. There died yesterday at his residence, Hataitai, Mr. J. H. Price, who had a stirring life in his earlier days as a lieutenant in the Royal Marine Light Infantry and whose sterling qualities made him many friends in later years. His fine record of active service is traditional in his family, which has fought on sea and land for many generations. A* a boy Mr. Price remembered visits to his father by Charles Dickens. Although not strong as .a child Mr. Price gained health and strength as a midshipman in tho navy and served in most parts of the world. He distinguished himself in tho Ashanti War' before command of tli# operations was taken by General Wolseiey and was twice mentioned -in despatches. After Mr. Price came to New Zealand he retired on, half pay and resided in Wellington for about 50 years. During In* training for the navy he had taken a special course in fortifications and year* ago contributed several reports to tho New Zealand Government upon coastal defences. Mr. Price would have been 80 years old next month. One son, Major R Price, was killed at tho Dardanelles in 1915. Mr. Price leaves a widow, one son and two daughters. Mr. Price's grandfather was decorated by King Louis of France shortly before 1800 fcr successfully defending an island off the coast of France against republican troops. His uncle was a ceptaiti. in the navy under Nelson and took part in nearly *4O engagements. His father was killed in action in -the Baltic.
