BUTTER FOR AUSTRALIA.
NEW ZEALAND IMPORTATIONS. HIGHER DUTIES SUGGESTED. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Dec. 14. A deputation representing the Australian Dairy Council, the Victorian Farmers' Union and the Primary Producers' Union of New South Wales waited upon the Minister of Customs, Mr. H. E. Pratten, and the Minister of Markets, Mr. T. Paterson, and asked that immediate action should be taken in connection with the large imports of butter into the Commonwealth from New Zealand. The deputation urged that the duties on butter and cheese from New Zealand should be increased to meet the position. Mr. Pratten, in reply, said that before any additional tariff could be considered by the Government the matter would have to go before the Tariff Board for inquiry and report. Then, even if Parliament agreed to an alteration in the duty, under the terms of the treaty with New Zealand, six months' notice would have to be given the New Zealand Government of the suggested alteration. Mr. Paterson promised to get into touch with the Dairy Produce Export Control Board to see if anything could be done to alleviate the position.
