HIGH SCHOOL HOSTELS.

PR OB LEIV! OF FINANCE. RELIEF FROM PROMISE SOUGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WHANGAREI, Tuesday. Some time ago the Whangarei High School Board of Governors s<sd to the Whangarei Harbour Board a portion of the Kioreroa endowment for the sum of £2350, and the money was placed on fixed deposit. When the then Minister of Education, Sir James Parr, was asked for a grant for the boys' new hostel he agreed to find a fair share of the amount necessary, provided the board contributed £ISOO from the sale mentioned. This the board agreed to do. However, a new position has arisen. Tenders have been received for the conversion of the present boys' hostel into a girls' hostel, the cost of the work being approximately £I2OO, and additional furnishings for both • hostels will cost £llOO. The board is therefore faced with the problem of finding £2300, an amount equal, to the purchase price of the portion of the endowment sold to .the Harbour Board. Yesterday the board sought the authority of the Minister of Education, Hon. B. A. Wright, to be relieved of its promise to contribute toward the cost of the new hostel in order that it would be able to use the whole of the £2300 for the two objects mentioned. The Minister was sympathetic but said he could not give an answer immediately. He would let the board know definitely during the second week in January.
