OBITUARY.

DR. KARL EBERTH. DISCOVERER OF TYPHUS GERM. A. and N.Z. BERLIN, Dec. 3. The death has occurred of Dr. Karl Eberth, scientist, aged 91. The late Dr. Karl Eberth was the discoverer of the typhus germ. He was born at Wurzburg, Germany, in November, 1835. He studied at the university there under some of the leading lights of the German medical faculty, notably Virchow and Kolliker, and was afterwards appointed an assistant professor of anatomy and a prosectoi there. In 1865 he was made professor of pathology at Zurich, where he remained until 1881, when he returned t-o Germany as professor of anat« omy at Halle. His most important achievement was the discovery in the course of bis medical researches of the bacillus of typhus fever. A clever draughtsman, he illustrated his ov?n books and those of many of his pupils with masterly drawings which are well known in the world of medicine. In 1911 Dr. Eberth resigned his chair and went to lire at Halensee, near Berlin. 9
