SATURDAY'S CLUB EVENTS. AUCKLAND OFFICIAL OPENING. PAIR-OAR TRIALS DECIDED. The official opening and At Home, ol! the Auckland Rowing Club took place, at the boathouse, King's Drire, on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of supporters and friends. An enjoyable time was spent, proceedings being interspersed with musical items and dancing, The Auckland Rowing Association and kindred clubs were represented. A set of pair-oar trials for trophies presented by Mr. G. Hogan was rowed, and, an interesting series of races was witnessed. Nine crews competed, and owing" 1 to the lengthy programme the final was postponed, until next Saturday. The course was from King's Wharf to the new reclamation. Starting was by mutual consent, and this club officers acted as judges. " The first heat drew R. Malin and J. Bygate against L. Hall and T. Newman. This crews raced on even terms until opposite the boatsheds, then Hall and Newman took tho lead and won by a length and a-hali. In the second heat R. Martin and B. Stacey met A. Coutts and G. Field. The first-named pair at once took command and rowed on to win easily. The, third heat drew G. Jonson and E>. Roughloy against W> Eaddy end E. Hill. This was an even race, until off the boathouses, when Eaddy and Hill took command and won by ono and a-half lengths. The fourth heat drew G. Cleal and EI. Goldwater against A. Andrews and A. Doull. The last-named pair took command at once, and won comfortably. The first semi-final drew J. McComish and A. Copeland, who had a bye, against R. Martin and R. Stacey. After 100 yards Martin and Stacey took command and won by about two lengths. The second semi-final drew L. Hall and T. Newman against W. Eaddy and E. Hill. Jumping away to a splendid start, the crews raced on even terms until reaching the new wall. In a spirited finish Eaddy and Hill gained the verdict by a bare half-length. The third semi-final was the race of the day, and drew R. Martin and R. Stacey against A. Andrews and A. Doull. From a fine start the crews raced evenly until opposite tho boathc-uses. On the run to the new wall Andrews and Doull held a slight lead. At the wall both crews spurted and in an exceptionally exciting finish Mu.rtin and Stacey won in the last stroke by half a canvas length. ST. GEORGE'S CLUB. SIR JAMES CO ATE S CUP. The annual trial fours for the Sir James | Coates Cup and caps were rowld by members of St. George's Rowing Club on Sat- ! urday afternoon. Splendid water conditions prevailed, and a spirited series of races re suited. The rowing was of a high standard. The first heat crews were: K. D. Page, A. Porter, L. Symons, J. Woodbury, Hoiisd (cox); F. Hammond, D. T. Hargrea.vißu, D. McGregor, D. Gordon, Sims (cox); D. Hugo, H. Jackson, T. M. V. Morton, V. Dunne, Jervis (cox). From a good start Hugo quickly took the lead, with Ps.ge second. The positions were unaltered until nearing the line, where Page challenged and, coming through fast, won by half a length, with Hugo second, two lengths ahead or Hammond The second heat crews were: V. Hargreaves, T. Duncan, W. Edwards, A. Gitace, Sims (cox); J. Blakey, F. Solomon, T. Lambert, E. McAnnalley, Jervis (cox). Jumping awfty to a good start, the two cwws raced oc even terms until the last 50 yards. Blakey then sprinted and drew .out to win by a good length. , / The third heat crews,were:. W. Woolhouse, L. Schrafft, C. Kelleway, S. Hislop, H«wse (cox); M. Simons, J, Coote, F Wilaon, A. Goodman, Sims (cox). The crews jumped off together and raced evenly tthtil just on the line, where Woolhouse challenged and shot ahead to win by half a length. The crews of Page, Blakey and Woolhcuso met in the final, and a fine start was effected. Page quickly took the lead, being closely followed by Woolhouse, Just past the half-distance mark Blakey drew level with Woolhouse, The three crews sj>u:rted in the last 100 yards, but Page maintained the advantage to win by a. length and ahalf from Blakey. who heat Woolhouse by a canvas length. i

WAITEMATA BOATING CLUB. MR, W. DENISON'S TROPHIES,. The members of the Waitemata Boating Club rowed a set of trial fours on 'Saturday afternoon for trophies presented by Mr. W. Denison. Good water conditions prevailed over the course from King's wharf to the new reclamation. The starting was by mutual consent, and the club officials acted as judges The crews in the first heat were:: V. Smith, C. Cairns, L. Barker, A. Moore; W. Stevenson, A. Stewart, H. Cullen, H. Ken-, rick: J. Johnson. C. Fearon, C. Ke«igan, W. Shore. Stevenson quickly took the lead with Smith in second place. ' The positions were unaltered until off the boatsheds, where Stevenson drew ahead and won by a good length, with Smith second. The second heat crews were: D. Smith, J. Stevenson, • T Impey, W. Joneß;, L. Brooker, A. M. Mackay, C. Hunt, E. Gladding. Smith at once took the lead. Crossing to the new wall Brooker challenged, but Smith's four responded and won by two lengths. The crews of Stevenson and Smitl'a met in the final. Smith was first away and held a lead of about a length until the new wall was reached. Stevenson then came with a great spurt, but Smith htang on to win by a bare half-length. WEST END CLUB. • % MR. E. L. STEWART'S TROPHIES. The members cf the West End Rowing Club held a set of trial fours on Saturday afternoon for trophies presented by Mr. E. L. Stewart Good water conditions prevailed over the long course from the 'Western reclamation to the Ponsonby baths. A high standard of rowing was witnessed. Starting was by mutual consent, audi Mr. W. Kellett acted as judge. The first heat crews were: A. C. Aorden, R. Snowden. W. McCredio, R. Wooiside, G. Dowling (cox); W. N. Bright. C. V. Nicklin, V. McDonald. R. Macey. Mortenson (cox). There was little between the crews until the shed was reached. Bright then took a slight lead and in a good finish won by a length. p The second heat crews were: 0. Folton. G. Dowling, M. Taylor. R. Ford, McDonald (cox); J. Haylock. S. Hadley, K. Newdick. F. McFarlane. McCarthy (cox). After going about half way the crews had a collision and. therefore, turned back. In the re-row the crews raced on level terms to the half-distance mark. Felton then forged ahead Just on the line Ha.ylock challenged, but Felton held on to win by a bare half-length. In the semi-final the crews were; C. J. Wright. G. Bloxliam, X. Conway, V. Broadway, R. McHardv (cox); W. N. Bright, C. V. Nicklin. W McDonald, R. Macey, Mortenson cox). Wright immediately took the lead and drew out to win easily by three lengths. The crews of O. Felton and C. ,7. Wright met in the final. From a good start Wright was first to show to advantage. At the half-distance he drew further out, but in the last run Felton came with a great spTirt An exciting finish ended in Wright's favour by a quarter of a length. NORTH SHORE CLUB. TRIAL FOURS RACE FOR TROPHIES. T'tia members of the North Shore Rowing Club held a set of trial fours on Saturday afternoon, for trophies presented by Mefidames Sea gar and Snarpe. Five crewa competed, and good racing was witressed. The first heat crews were: Folt.as. WrigSey, Everson, Extern, Seagar (cox); Korn, Townsend, McCallum, Moody. Eagles (cos) • Korn quickly took the lead and, although Follas drew level oS Ventnor, Korn again shot ahead and won by three lengths. The second heat crews were: Atkins. Fraser, Jack. Malyon. Eagles (cox); Dean. Seagar, Gee, Hine, Seagar (cox), Atkins quickly took the lead, but at the halfdistance Dean went to the front. Atkins then challenged, and. in a hard finish Dean won by half a length. - In the semi-final Korn's crew met Davies, Challinor. Stead. Exton. Seagar (cox). Korn's crew led to the half-distance, where Davies closed up to just on hall a length. Korn's crew then responded and drew out to win by a length and a-half. In the final the crews of Dean, and Korn met. The two crews raced leved until jiint off Ventnor. Dean then moved into the lead. In the last ran Korn challenged, but Dean's crew hung on to wm> a good race by a length.
