PETROL PRICES REDUCED.

NEW RATES IN ENGLAND. Australian and N.Z. Cfeble Association. CRecd. 9.35 c.m.) LONDON. Oct. 31. The retail price of petrol from pumps is to be reduced to-morrow to Is 6d a gallon in London and in the home counties, to Is 7d in the provinces, to Is 8d in Scotland, and to Is 9d in Ulster. The Commonwealth Government is today issuing on the local market a loan of £6,000,000. Thfi rate of interest offered is per cent. The loan is being issued at par and will be rapayable up to 1943. Lamb.—The market is dull owing to heavy supplies of Home-killed lambs. Mutton: There is only a limited demand for wethers and ewes. ABRAHAM AND WILLIAMS, LTD. DIVIDEND OF 5 PER CENT. The 25th annual report of Abraham and Williams, Ltd., shows a not profit for the year of £15,343, against £21,451 last year, to which has to bo added the amount brought forward from last year, £14,208, making a total of £29,556. From this sum has to be deducted the interim dividend for the six months' ended March 31, 1926, paid in April last, £7757, leaving a balance available for distribution, £21.798. From this sum {he half-year's dividend on preference shares amounting to £2460 was paid on October 1, and the directors recommend that a dividend of 24 per cent, for the half-year be paid on the ordinary shares, which, with the 2S, per cent, paid in April last, makes the dividend 5 per cent, for the vear (the same as last year), leaving £14,032 to be carried forward. WINNIPEG'S GREAT PJTURE. THE "CHICAGO OF CANADA." It was stated recently by Mr. A. G. Sorlie, Governor of the State of North Dakota, that Winnipeg in the near future will be to the rest of Canada what Chicago is to the United States. He said that the city is looking ahead, building with an eye to the future, and that, with the completion of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence waterway projects, it will progress beyond all recognition. This growth and development, lie added, will reawaken an interest in the waterways as a means of transportation and the excessive cost of long rail hauls will thus be eliminated.

INDUSTRY IN CANADA.

INCREASE IN EMPLOYMENT. There was a further increase in employment in Canada at the beginning of August, according to statistics from 5864 firms employing 854,604 workers, as compared with 849,565 on July 1. The index number rose from 103.7 on the latter date to 104.2 on August 1, as compared with 96.3, 94 7 and 100.2 on August 1, 1925, 1924 and 1923, respectively. Manufacturing, construction, services, trade, communication and transportation showed, on the whole, moderate improvement, while continued seasonal losses were indicated in logging. CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAYS. EXCELLENT REVENUE RETURNS. The Canadian Pacific Railway earnings and expenses for the month of July show that the return for that month is the best in ten years as to net, and the second greatest July gross in the history of the company, July of 1920 having topped this year's figures by about £200,000. The record for the seven months is also impressive, the gross exceeding £20,000,000 for the second time in historv for this period, and being second only to the seven months' period of 1920. LONDON SHEEPSKIN SALES. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cablegram frcm their London house dated October 29: —Sheepskins Sales: 6050 bales were offered and 4250 bales sold. The latest report from the MareMson Oil Company's bore is that the hole is down 1494 ft.
