CO-OPERATION SOUGHT, ADVISORY BOARD'S DECISIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 2 ■ WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Advisory Board of Scientific and . Industrial Research, concluded its in* i augural sittings to-day. The proceedings were devoted mainly . to a review of the researches at present , undertaken in the Dominion having a bearing on. the primary and secondary industries and discussion of the best means by which those researches might I be co-ordinated and extended in directions of importance from a national economic point of view. After discussion with the DirectorGeneral of Agriculture, Dr. C. J. Reakes,' and members of the Agricultural Department staff, a committee was appointed t to report to the next council meeting on researches in connection with investigation in seed and plant diseases and plant breeding. The question of the linking np of the investigation in the Dominion with those in other parts of the Empire and the affording of a free and prompt interchange and dissemination of results was also considered by the council. A committee was appointed to coruult with the Mines Department regarding co-operation with respect to researches conected with coal and its utilisation, and in particular the possibility of distilla- . tion and briquetting of slack. Members expressed the opinion Vhat in all researches the industry concerned, , whether primary or secondary, should , contribute a substantial share of the cost , of the investigations and take an active interest in it so as to ensure full co- , operation and application of the ensuing benefits. Arrangements were made for securing reports from ships in the Tasman Sea to help in -weather forecasting and a committee was appointed to confer with the Dominion meteorologist. The question of national research scholarships was considered and amended draft regulations were drawn up. It is anticipated that the next meeting will determine the lines of the major activities of the department.
