ATTACKED IN STREET.
INCIDENT AT WAIHI. MINER STRUCK ON HEAD. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] ' WAIHI. Wednesday. When returning to his boarding house in the main thoroughfafe about 11 o'clock last night after having visited some friends at the east end of the town a miner, William L. Rudd, was attacked by some person or persons unknown and struck on the back of the head with such violence that he collapsed on the footpath. The next he remembered was that his head was aching and bleeding freely. After staggering to the boarding house, about 150 yds. away, he managed to scramble inside, and fell unconscious. Medical aid.was summoned and Rudd was conveyed to the hospital, where he remained unconscious until the morning. Interviewed later by the police, the injured man expressed the opinion that the implement used in striking him. was a bottle. This view is supported by the result of the examination of the wound made by Dr. J. M. Cole, medical superintendent of the hospital. Rudd was reported to be making satisfactory progress this afternoon.
