THEFT AND FRAUD CHARGES. USE OF VALUELESS CHEQUES. PROBATION FOR FIVE YEARS. When Muriel Forbes Raid, aged 27, appeared in the Police Court yesterday for sentence on a number of charges of obtaining credit by fraud and theft, three more charges were preferred against her to which she pleaded guilty. The additional charges were that sho obtained £3 from Mrs. Diamond in Wellington by means of a valueless cheque; that at Wellington she obtained goods valued at £9 and £23 in money from tho Direct Importing Company, by means of a valueless cheque; and that at Auckland she obtained £3O from the Ideal Loan Company by falsely representing that she was the owner of a Broadwood piano. Senior-Detective Hammond said accused had a mother and sister in Auckland, but they refused to recognise her. They said they did not know her. , Major Gordon, female probation officer, said accused could not very well go to gaol in her present condition. She suggested accused should be given a term of probation and that she should remain in the charge of witness. " This is as bad a case as we have had in this Court, in which a woman has be>en involved," the magistrate, Mr. Hunt, said. " Sho has cheated wherever she has gone." Addressing accused be said: "Now, look here, I am going to place von on probation for five years. If you misbehave you will he brought up on any one of these charges and you will not be allowed to see your children." "I do not sec how she can see her children now," Major Gordon said. "Sho is not fit to see them." The Magistrate: That is a matter that, can be dealt with later. When the senior detective raised the question of restitution, the magistrate said it would be useless asking for restitution, as she had no income.
