THE CITY COUNCIL.

GRAFTON BRIDGE REPAIRS. BELGIUM STREET PETITION. The Auckland City Conncil met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, presiding. Mr. J. B. Paterson drew attention to the state of the roadway over Grafton Bridge, pointing out that pedestrians often suffered the annoyance of having their clothes splashed with mud by passing vehicles on wet day;!. The Mayor stated the engineer had been instructed to make the repairs to this road surface an urgent matter. A letter was received from Mr. Moss Davis offering to the council the painting by Lord Leighton entitled "The Spirit of the Summit." It was decided to accept the painting and to convey to the donor the council's best thanks for his further generous gift to the Auckland Art Gallery. Reporting on an inqniry by the City West Ratepayers' Association j when repairs to Jervois Road would be carried out, the cfty engineer stated the concreting of this road was included in the schedule submitted to the ratepayers and would be carried out in duo course, and certainly some time next year. It was decided to reply to that effect. Permission was granted to the managers of St. David's Church to remove a portion of the church from Khyber Pass Road and attach it to the rear of a house in Virginia Avenue, Eden Terrace, to be used for Sunday school purposes. Mr. J. B. Paterson presented a petition from 45 ratepayers of Belgium Street asking the council to consider the advisability of giving this thoroughfare its original name of Upper Queen Street. It was claimed that it would be more convenient for all concerned if the street were so named. The petition was referred to the Works Committee. An offer by Mrs. E. E. McMillan of an area of a little over six acres adjoining the council property near the Great North Road, Point Chevalier, to be used as a recreation reserve, for the sum of £3OO was declined. The city engineer was authorised to have interior painting work done at the Central Library, Wellesley Street-at a cost of £lB3.
