RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

WIDE EXTENT OF BETTING. TRIBUTE TO MANAGEMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. "We know nothing about Letting in this country." said Mr. J. S. Barrett, the wellknown C'hristchurch sportsman, who has just returned from a visit to Sydney. Mr. Barrett has attended all the recent big race meetings in Australia and is much impressed with the way things are managed The bookmakers do not find favour in his eyes. "The scale on which the betting is conducted is an eye-opener," he said. "We know nothing: about it in this country, and it is a good tiling that we don't. - The 'hookies' are fair and above board and they run (heir businesses in an excellent, manner. but I would be sorry to see them i>n the courses in New Zealand. The management of the big race meetings is wonderful and a model of efficiency. They handle a crowd of 83,000 with the case that we would handle 10,000. " The racing was good and interesting. Undoubtedly the best horse in Australia today is Limerick. Ciiven n clear run he would certainly have won the Craven Plate. As it was the winner, Windbag, only just managed to saueezo home.
