BOROUGH OF DEVONPORT.
DRAINAGE FEE LEVIES. ARTILLERY QUEEN CARNIVAL. The Devonport Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr. T. Lamont, presiding. The inspector of war graves expressed appreciation of the condition of the soldiers' graves at O'Neill's Point Cemetery. All the graves had received attention and he thanked the council for its action in undertaking the vvorM. The opinion of the borough solicitor regarding the powers of the council to levy a drainage construction fee on landowners who were not connected with the drainage system was received. A motion to the effect that no further levies he made was carried. The question of a refund of feos already paid was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee for a report. Permission was granted to the Artillery Queen Carnival Committee to hold a carnival on Cheltenham Beach on November 6. Tho residents of Rata Road were granted permission to construct asphalt tennis courts at the end of the street. It was proposed to pay a visit of inspection to Rangitoto Island at an early date, when the Minister of Justice, the Mayor of Auckland and representatives of other boroughs would be asked to accompany the members of the council.
