WHERE ANZACS FOUGHT.
NEW ZEALANDER'S BOOK. SIR I. HAMILTON'S TRIBUTES. Sun. LONDON. Oct. 8. A ' New Zealand writer, Mr. T.' J. Pomborton, has published a book entitled "GaUipoli To-day." Sir lan Hamilton has written an introduction, in which he says the most accurate estimate of the losses at GaUipoli are:—Turks: Killed, 63,256; wounded, 168,612; sent to hospital, 238,094. British: Killed, 32,562; missing, 7654; wounded, 78,261. He says: "In Whitehall and Fleet Street the Dardanelles was lost. Let New Zealanders and Britons never forget it. Wo had tho old bnll-dog spirit. "The British soldiers were reinforced by what will bo the determining factor in tho future of the world, namely, tho spirit of the English-speaking Antipodes. Behind ns we had a swarm of adverse influences —general headquarters in France, tho chief of tho general staff at tho War Office, tho First Sea Lord at tho Admiralty, tho Grand QnarticrGeneral and the Cabinet in Franco and tho best-organised part of the British press. "Faint hearts and the fecblo wills seemed to succeed in making vain tho sacrifices of Anzac, Holies and Suvla. Only the dead stuck it out. God bless them for ever." Referring to General Sir Alexander Godley's speech at tho unveiling of the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair, Sir lan says: "Demosthenes himself could not have enhanced tho effect of tho story told by this soldier, who had played a leading part." Mr. Pemborton's book is fully illustrated. It gives an admirably impressive description of tho hallowed ground on GaUipoli as it appears to-day. It fully details tho activities which are ensuring a suitable memorial to those who suffered there.
