DRAINAGE IN THAMES.
OMAHU AND ONETAI AREAS. CONCESSION TO SETTLERS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES, Friday. The decision of the Hon. K. S. Williams affecting the pockets of settlers in the Omahu and Onetai drainage districts in connection with tho Government Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement scheme, was responsible for many expressions of satisfaction at yesterday's meeting of the Thames County Council. After referring to previous correspondence on the subject, the Minister advised that tho proposal that the council should arrange for a contribution of two-thirds of the cost of the Omahu and drainage improvements had been reviewed, and he was prepared to waive that requirement. Tho work in question would lie carried out as part of the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement work. It was proposed to start the work as soon as the drag-line had completed its work on the Hikufaia Stream, a period of six or eight weeks being required for this. ]t was understood tho settlers fully realised that under the Waihou and Ohinomuri Rivers improvement work the lands benefited would, in due course, be rated for a portion of the betterment conferred.
