OMAR KHAYYAM.
NEWLY-FOUND 4 MANUSCRIPT. A TRANSLATION COMMENCED. Australian -and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10.35 p.m.) DELHI. Oct. 7. Reports have been received from Karachi to the effect that widespread interest has been excited by the discovery at Sind of a manuscript which contains a hitherto .unknown work of the poet Omar Khayyam. A translation of thfi manuscript lias been commenced by a prominent Indian Civil Servant, who is receiving the aid of a Persian scholar of Sind Following closely the style of 1* itzgerald's admirable translations of the earlier known works oi the poet, the 12 quatrains which have thus far been translated are typical of those in the Rubaiyat. This may bo gauged by the following lines:— " See where the grub of passion dies, the caterpillar heaves its reasoning sighs, then cedes the torch to butterflies, that view the world in splendour from experienced eyes."
