SCHOOL GRAMOPHONES.
CONTRACT BY DEPARTMENT. BRITISH MAKES SELECTED. [by telbouaph.—own correspondent. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The announcement was made to-night that a fresh contract for 12 months for the supply of gramophones to the schools throughout the Dominion had been accepted by the Education Department. The two makes of gramophones jointly selected are of British manufacture—the Columbia and His Master's Voice. The Minister stated that after tenders had closed a committee of experts went into the matter and examined about 20 different varieties, from which the two makes mentioned were selected. Where schools require gramophones the local school committee provides half the cost and the State the balance, it being a condition, of course, that either the His Master's Voice or the Columbia machine is purchased.
