BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.
SMOKE FROM SUGAR WORKS.
COMPANY TO BE APPROACHED
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. liadfield, presiding. It was decided to notify the Colonial Sugar Refining Company that a petition had been received from a large number of residents asking that action should bo taken to abate the nuisance arising from tho smoke from the chimney stacks at the Chelsea works.
The chairman said that while it must be admitted that the smoke was a nuisance to a certain section of the borough, it was only fair to say that the company had spent thousands of pounds in an endeavour to abate {he trouble. He understood the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skoates, was taking up the matter with the directors in Australia. The question would again come, up for consideration when a reply from the company was received. The waterworks engineer reported that the water consumption during September was 2,425.000 gallons. Six permits for new buildings were granted.
It was resolved to accept control of the Birkenhead scenic 4 reserve for a further term.
The tender of Mr. R. McDonald was accepter! for the electric lighting installation of the borough chambers.
