MR. GEORGE McNAMARA.
OTHER CHANGES ANNOUNCED.

Tlx; Postmaster-Genera], Hon. W. Nosworthy, announced to-night that the Government has appointed Mr. George McNamara to the position of secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department in succession to Mr. A. T. Markman, who retires at the end of October.
Mr. McNamara, who now holds the position of first assistant secretary, will be succeeded in that office by Mr. J. Kobertson, present second assistant secretary, who, in' turn will bo succeeded by Mr. M. B. Esson, chifcf inspector of the department.
With the appointment of Mr. McNamara to the head of the department is completed the most rapid rise in the history of the post .ar.d _ telegraph service. Mr. McNamara, who is 45 years of age,' joined the service s.h Invercarpill in 1896, and has been through practically every branch. He acted at Invercargill in different capacities, being more particularly engaged on the accountancy side of the office. A year was spent in Dunedin, and in 1908 the new secretary was transferred to the head office at Wellington, being appointed assistant-staff clerk the following year. In 1914 Mr. McNamara became superintendent of staff and in 1920 he was promoted to the position of second secretary. The next step was taken in September, 1923. when he. became first assistant. Mr. McNamara has come under public notice through his association with motor vehicle registrations. He was responsible for the introduction of' the once much maligned system of the number plates which, now however, appears to be giving satisfaction. .Mr. McNamara was a member of the NW Zealand Air Board during its existence and is a member of the Hutt Power Board.
