' The electoral rolls fbr Auckland city and suburbs, covering eight districts, are still'receiving the attention of the Regis trar of 'Electors, Mr. F. Evans, and his staff, notwithstanding that the general elections were held nine months ago. Since 'November, when the rolls were brought up-to-date as far as possible for the general election, 6189 applications have been made in the eight electorates by persons anxious to have their flames recorded. After taking into consideration 9815 removals, the net number on the rolls is now 88,486.

Mr. Evans' stated yesterday that some difficulty was still being experienced through people failing to have their names" recorded. Through their negligence after the expiry of the. seven months' grace allowed in which to enrol after taking up residence in an 'electoral district, many were leaving themselves open to prosecution. Since November, a general purging of the rolls had been carried out, and extensive inquiries were made concerning the whereabouts of people who failed to vote. ,The Eden by-election was responsible for a substantial increase in the registered electors for that district, and there were now 13,982 on the roll. Roskill still contained the largest number of registered electors, who totalled 14,300 The figures for other districts were:—Parnell, 13,413; Waitemata,

13,113; Grey Lynn, 12,326; Auckland West, 11,534; Auckland East, 10,607; Auckland Central, 9211. It was pointed out by the registrar that many people were satisfied on leaving a certain electoral district, with filling in the form at the foot of the change of address slip supplied by the post office.. However, fresh application had to be made for registration in the now district, before the expiry of the time limit. Unregistered men and women who had attained the age of 21 since the elections were now required to apply for registration, provided they were British by birth or naturalisation in New Zealand, had resided in the country for a year, and had lived for three months in their district.
