DUTY ON POTATOES.
PROPOSAL TO INCREASE. CONSIDERATION IN AUSTRALIA. A. and NZ. ~~~ SYDNEY. Aw. 3. As a result of representations made by Tasmanian and "Victorian potato growers the Tariff Board in Melbdurno met to-day to consider the advisability of increasing tho duty on imported potatoes. - The Sydney Morning Herald says tho agents view th'a possible outcome of tho inquiry 'with considerable, perturbation. The proposed increase in duty can only be aimed at 'New Zealand potatoes. In consequence of the small crop th.rougnout the Commonwealth large quantities of these have been imported in the present season.. . : ■ ■ One agent says the height to which prices would have soared had no New Zealand potatoes been, forthcoming was a matter of speculation, but it would havo been carried beyond the reach oi most people. ' The price' of New Zealand - potatoes was reasonable, and therefore they were being purchased by many in preference to other varieties.
