THE WRECKED MANAIA.

VESSEL BREAKING UP., BRIDE'S LUGGAGE SALVAGED,* The Northern Company's steamer Manaia, which was wrecked on Slipper Island on June 10, is gradually being demolished by wind and sea. The after part of the hull from the mainmast to the stern broke away during the easterly gale experienced in the Bay of Pleuty two •weeks ago. The seas now wash right up inside of the hull au far as the saloon unci th<a port side of the vessel is under water at high-tide. Fine weather prevailed for a considerable period after the accident and Messrs. Gory-Wright brothers, who bought the wreck for £lO5, were able to salvage practically everything of value on board before the weather changed. Besides a quantity of ■ the steamer's fittings the machinery was salvaged from the after hold before that part of the hull fell into deep water.. Most of the cargo in the fore hold was also salvaged, including four cases of personal effects belonging to a newly married woman passenger. She had six cases in the hold altogether and they contained all her wedding presents. It is not certain whether the other two cases will be recovered. Other cargo in the fore hold not salvaged consists mostly of cases of eggs, lemons, bacon and bales of sheepskins, as well as other general items.
