THROWN FROM A GIG.
WOMAN FATALLY INJURED. HORSE BOLTS WITH VEHICLE. VICTIM TRIES TO JUMP CLEAR. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Monday. A fatality occurred on the Huirau Road on Saturday afternoon resulting in the dentil, at the Thames Hospital yesterday, of Mrs. Bertha Bond, aged 47, w'f® of Mr. Samuel E, Bond, farmer, of Hopai. Mr. and Mrs. Bond left liopai early in the afternoon, in a gig to inspect a farm in the Turua district. On arrival the horse was tied to a post in the usual manner. After inspecting the farm' Mrs. Bond mounted the gig being followed by Mr. Bond, who noticed the horse had not been properly unfastened. He quickly descended but the horse became restless and excited.
While Mr. Bond was calming the animal its bridle fell off and the horse bolted in the direction of some metal trucks. Realising that an accident was inevitable Mr. Bond called to his wife to jump intending her to dismount with the help of a hoard at the rear of the vehicle. Mrs. Bond endeavoured to comply, but apparently tainted and was thrown violently falling on her head. After first aid had been rendered by neighbours, Dr. Lange ordered her removal to the Thames Hospital, where Dr. A. S. Gray operated immediately after her admission. Mrs. Bond, was found to have sustained a fracture of the skull and little hope was entertained for her recovery. She rallied for a while, but succumbed at 6 p.m. yesterday. *
At an inquest this afternoon the accident was described as above. . The principal witness, Mr. Bond, stated that after the deceased fell the horse safely negotiated several bends before coming to a halt in a farm yard. The gig and horse being undamaged. A verdict of accidental dsath was returned.
