RABBITS OVERRUN STATION
SHEEP ALMOST DISPLACED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WANGANUI, "Wednesday. Reference to the extent to which rabbits are flourishing in the Karioi district was made by a Wanganui , sportsman who recently visited a station there. Hs says that the land is as "bare as a board," and the theory is that the rabbits had migrated from Hawke's Bay during the dry season. On a two-acre block the owners of the stations distributed poisoned carrots and 2000 rabbits were destroyed. The skins were sold. Some years ago this station produced 90 bales of wool and a few years later, owing to the depredations of the rabbits, the total clip was reduced to three. Last year the clip was only two bales. The rabbits have almost entirely replaced the sheep and the only hope of making a living at all was what could be derived from the rabbit skins.
