DAVIS CUP CONTEST.
CANADA VERSUS CUBA. GREAT PHYSICAL STRUGGLE. (Received 5.5 p.mi) Router. HAVANA. July 17. In the Davis Cup contest, Canada v. Cuba, tho singles .yesterday resulted:— Crocker (Canada) defeated Banet 6—4,..6—-4, 6—ls Paris- (Cuba) .-..defeated Wright (Canada), 2—6, 6—-4, 2—6, 6—3, 6—4. \ ' f "7 '7- ' Both matches were strenuously, contested in torrid heat. Crocker was handicapped, by a cold and a sore throat. He was exhausted at the end of .the second set and iced water was poured down his back. Thus refreshed he,; won his match against Banet, by which, time he was again exhausted and retired 'to. the club house. ' He returned later and joined the 1000 spectators ,of his countryman's match against Paris; Wright played very gamely. - 1 - In the doubles to-day Chancon and Paris (Cuba) defeated Wright and Crocker, B—6, 3—6, 6—B, B—6, 6—2. The Canadians were defeated after a gruelling three and a-half hours' battle, in which both sides were handicapped. Crocker was in poor physical condition, from the-outset, while Paris was injured in yesterday's play and wore an anklebrace. - • . ■"
The Cubans rallied and- won the first set after the. Canadians had taken the sixth and seventh games to love, hut they could not counter the Canadians' attack in the secbnd and third sets in spite of vigorous lobbing,.. . ... „• In the final sets the Cubans effectively concentrated their attack oil- the weary Crocker, who was completely exhausted at the conclusion, and was carried off the court by his friends,
