A series of sensational incidents last evening culminated in the opening of the Police Court at Ngaruawahia at 11 o'clock to hear a charge of attempting to murder a girl named Muriel Tetzlaff, aged 19, preferred against Roy Charles Dorn, aged 19. Information that the girl was lying in a critical condition at Ngaruawahia was first received by the Hamilton police by telephone late last evening, and as the result of later information DetectiveSergeant Sweeney and Detective Gulloty visited a boarding house in Barton Street and arrested Dorn, who was then taken to Ngaruawahia. In the presence of tho accused, who was represented by Mr. E. A. Cox, of Hamilton, two justices of the peace, Messrs. H. Maryland and F. G. Jackson, and Detectives Sweeney and Cuiloty, the girl s depositions were taken in the house where she lay by Mr. J. M. Adam, registrar of the Court at Hamilton. In a lengthy statement the girl said she and accused had been keeping company for the past two years. Being in a certain condition she visited him in Hamilton on Wednesday night and after a long conversation it was arranged that they should be married on Saturday. She gathered that he did not love her. He asked her to call on him the next day. She did this and was given a small bottle of ammonia and some small sticks of substance to take with the liquid. She went to Ngaruawahia, and yesterday afternoon took the liquid and sticks m her bedroom. She became violently ill, a doctor was called, and as a result of her condition communicated with the police. Accused was remanded to appear at Hamilton on January 13.
Inquiries to-day elicited a reply that the girl was recovering.
