PAKAPOO AT WELLINGTON.
CHINESE PREMISES RAIDED. FINES IN THE POLICE COURT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCX-VTION. ] . WELLINGTON. Friday. A police raid in Haining and Taranaki Streets yesterday resulted in the arrests of five Chinese on charges of keeping gaming houses, and of three whites and two Chinese for being found on the premises. All pleaded guilty this morning before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. The police said that pakapoo was increasing, and getting a big hold on Europeans. Mr. Mazengarb, for tho defence, said that, in view of other forms of unlawful gambling connived at by the State, there was nothing alarming in the increase iti pakapoo. Big lotteries were j allowed by pooplo in high places, whoso duty it was to enforce the law. The gaming laws needed amendment before respect for them could be expected from the Chinese community. Four Chinese keepers were fined £25, and another £4O, and fines of £2 were imposed on those found on the premises.
