NEW YEAR INAUGURATION. HUNDREDS or EXTRA MEN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 1. A largo number of unions are applying to the Arbitration Court for variations of their awards to give effect to tho 44-hour a week system. Tho employers are not opposing the applications. Tho inauguration of tho 44-hour weeksystem takes place throughout New South Wales to-day. Shorter hours will mean considerably more expense in the large Government departments, such as the railways, as the employment of some hundreds of extra men is necessitated. The extra expense occasioned by the contractors for tho Sydney harbour bridge will bo borne by tho Treasury under special provision in the contract.
