HUMAN SKELETON FOUND.
OTAMATEA RIVER MYSTERY. YACHT FATALITIES RECALLED. [BY TELEGRAM!. OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 WHANGAREI. Thursday. " A well preserved human skeleton with the left leg missing and a thigh bone fractured, was found by Mr. G. H. Jackson, while picnicking at Timber Bay on the Otamatea River. It -is surmised that it is that of a Maori, but at present expert opinion upon the point has not been obtained. The find lias recalled boating tragedies, which h-ve occurred on the Otamatea Harbour and surrounding localities. In 1900 a yacht left Okakaru for Batley with three natives on board, two males and a female, all of whom were drowned. Later another yacht capsized in the Pahi River with three men, E. Linton, Hannigan and Lumberg. The last mentioned was saved. Linton's body />vas recovered, but Hannigan's was never found. Constable Boag, of Maungaturoto, intends to search in the vicinity of the place where the skeleton was found for personal effects which may establish identity.
