CHARGE AGAINST SENATOR. AMERICAN OIL SCANDALS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 29. The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed the indictment charging Senator Wheeler with misuse of office in connection with the granting of permits to work oil lands. This ends the cases which followed the investigation by the Senate Committee into the activities of the Department of Justice in 1924. Senator Wheeler was a. leading member of the Senate Committee which investigated the American oil scandals last year. He was charged with accepting a bribe, after becoming a senator, to influence the granting of permits to work oii lands. It appeared that Mr. Wheeler's law firm accepted a fee of £253 for defending the interests of one section of oil promoters who were attempting to prevent others from obtaining valuable oil-drilling rights. At the time the indictment was made Mr. Wheeler's friends declared that it was mainly inspired by his enemies and was designed to distract public attention from the Senate Committee's revelations.
