MRS. DOEHSSHUM THE WINNER. A FINE, STEADY DISPLAY. LOSER SHOWS GREAT HEART. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The ladies' golf tournament was concluded at Miramar to-day when Mrs. Dodgshun, Otago, defeated Mrs. J. A. Cook, Otago, in the final of the New Zealand championship by 8 up and 7. Tho play of both through the greens was very steady, that of Mrs. Dodgshun being remarkably so, while the putting of Mrs. Dodgshun was up to a high standard. That of Mrs. Cook was very weak and therein lay her downfall. Mrs. Cook had the honour from the first tee. She found the bunker and had to play a safe second. She played a good brassie third and was close t.o the pin in 4. Mrs. Dodgshun found her way to the green without incident. Bad putting caused Mrs. Cook to take 7 against Mrs. Dodgshun's 5. The next went to Mrs. Cook in 4, Mrs. Dodgshun's second finding the bunker. Mrs. Dodgshun had the longer drive to the third and with a good brassie second was on the green in 3 to Mrs. Cook's 4. A bad putt by the Utter lost her the chance for - 'a half in 5. Both were on the next green in 2 from very good drives. Mrs. Cook narrowly missed the 3, but Mrs. Dodgshun made no mistake, and became 2 up. At, the next MrsCook missed a 9in. putt for a win. Ihe influence of this was probably the reason of her pulling her next tee shot into the rough level with the short 6th and finding the bunker with her second. Mi'sDodgshun was on the green and holed to win in 3. The seventh hoi© was Mrs. Dodgshun's only really bad break. She topped her tee shot into the rough, got 20yds. with her second and was still short of Mrs. Cook's drive with her third. Mrs. Cook played a beautiful brassie second to just short of the green, which she was on in 3. Mrs. Dodgshun played a long iron for her sth and was across the green with her sixth. She passed the hole again with her return and then picked up. She recovered herself, and her lead of 3 up, by taking the eighth in 4, Mrs. Cook taking 3 putts. Mrs. Dodgshun increased her lead to 4 up, taking the ninth 5—6. Fine Inward Struggle. Prom now to the end of the round Cook, who fought all the way with great heart, hold grimly on to her opponent. She lost the tenth, 5—4, by reason of a beautiful approach shot by Mrs. Dodgshun to 4ft, from the pin. A long putt by Mrs. Cook just ran over the hole. Mrs. Cook played a great approach third to the eleventh. Ift, from the pin. Airs. Dodgshun had topped her tee shot and was still a long putt from the hole in 4, so she picked up. Mrs. Cook got well out, of a bunker going to the 12th, to be on the green, 3ft. away from the pin, in 2. holding in o. Mrs. Dodgshun, who was on the green from the tee, missed a long putt for a win m 2 and halved. The positions were unaltered at the 13th, which was halved in 5. Mrs. Cook had duffed her tee shot, but recovered brilliantly. _ Mrs. Dodgshun played a brilliant drive on to the 14th green and took the hole, 3 becoming 5 up. Going to the Crater, Mrs. Dodgshun was beautifully on the green, 4ft. from the pin, in 2. She missed the putt, a half in 4 resulting. Mrs. Cook reduced the lead to 4 up by taking the next hole, 4—5, Mrs. Dodgshun missing a short putt, Mrs. Cook had played a fine approach to within 6sn. of the "pin. Both played badly to the 17th, which Mrs. Dodgshun won m 6. Mrs. Cook picking up. The 18th was halved in 7, the round ending with Mrs. Dodgshun holding the comfortable lead of 5 up. Mrs. Cook Battles Bravely. Going out again, indifferent golf along the fairway was the portion of both to the first, which was halved in 6. Both were on the green in 2 at the next, a half in 4 resulting. Mrs. Cook showed she had not lost heart by taking the third, 5—7. just missing a long putt for 4. Mrs. Dodgshun regained her 5 up lead by taking the 4th by faultless golf j n 4—5. Both played good golf to halve tho sth in 4, Mrs. Cook narrowly missing a 3. Both were on the 6th in 2, Mrs. Cook earning applause for a shot which lay 3ft. from the pin. Mrs. Dodgshun, however, holed from 18ft. for 2 and Mrs. Cook missed the putt for a half, taking 3. Mrs. Dodgshun 6 up. Mrj3. Cook missed a short putt at the next, which went to Mrs. Dodgshun in 5. The Bth was halved in 4. Both were close to the green at the 9th in 3, but a missed putt by Mrs. Cook and the holing of a long one by Mrs. Dodgshun gave the latter a lead of 8 up. Mrs. Cook, with two long shots, found the next green in 3. Mrs. Dodgshun just failed with a brilliant long putt, which, however, stymied Mrs. Cook'. With 2 for a win, Mrs. Cook played safe, taking the hole 5—7. The 11th was a chapter of accidents for both, their drives being dulled into long grass. Mrs. Cook tried twice to get out and the third time played back for safety. Mrs. Dodgshun took 2 to get out and won the hole, 9—lo. and the match, 8 and 7. Mrs. Dodgshun won the Otago open championship the past three seasons and also holds the Canterbury championship. Mrs. Cook was runner-up for the NewZealand championship at Herotaunga in 1911 and defeated Mrs, Dodgshun for the Otago Club championship last- season. Mrs. Dodgshun, besides tho challenge cup and gold medal, took a coffee set. presented by the Miramar Club. Mrs. Cook got the Golf Union's silver medal and a silver travelling clock. Misses Jcrvis and Withers, the semi-finalists, received bronze medals, Mrs. Guy Williams the Mcllsop Cup and replica and a brass tray for the best gross score, and the casserole special prize; Miss White-Par-sons the London Golf Union's Challenge Bowl and replica, and a gold wristlet watch for the best net score of the meeting. Miss Acheson took the prize for the best gross score, and Miss Harkness the prize for runner-up. Miss Petrie won the Coronation Medal and miniature, with a trophy.
