LAND PRIZES IN LOTTERIES.
Sir, —Now that there is so much money i going out of the country in Australian | foreign lotteries, may I make a suggest lion applicable to New Zealand, which I j believe will not only keep money from i leaving the country hut would be respon- j sible tor developing at present unproductive Crown lands. New Zealand has vast, tracks of Crown lands lying idler I suggest the Government organise lotteries with say, 500-acre blocks of land as ! prizes, with conditions that the winners j must settle and improve their land within I six months after the draw. I feel sure j that a great many New Zealanders would i participate in such a scheme, in preference to sending their money to Prussian and other lotteries which are supposed to be illegal in New Zealand.
