BROADCASTING.

Sir,—l am glad to see the protests being made against the continued use of tlio spark transmitter from VLD, as one of your correspondents state, it intrudes upon every station in every concert—and spoils every speech or lecture. Surely it is time this obnoxious interference was removed. If only half or quarter of this interference was caused by a private radio transmitter' hig license would have been cancelled long ago. J. L. N. Hemingway. Sir, —I certainly think the right note has been struck at last. It is high time that listeners-in had something for the 30s paid by them to the Government for each licenso. Some timo ago it was pointed out very clearly that a prosecution would be the result of not obtaining a license. It is apparently all take and no give. I refer here, not to the music broadcasted, but to the continuous interruption and distortion of all broadcasted, items by the incessant and irritating transmissions from the local spark station, VLD. An early assurance that this nuisance is to bs removed would bo exceedingly welcome. Aerial.

Sir, —I cannot say that I ever remember having paid thirty bob to listen to VLD and I think that the sooner this interference with broadcasting is brought to an end the better, and when this much overdue state of affairs does 'come into being the sooneir the radio licenses will be increased, with the result that there will bo more revenue to assist the betterment of broadcasting in New Zealand. At present we are Worse oil than when we p&id only 5s for oar annual license, as IYB is now ofi tho air and, it is rumoupd that IYA may haveto curtail its broadcasts—so where does the thirty bob come in ? We all had to pay the increased license fee early in the year and now we are approaching the end of the year and where are the improved broadcasts? I gathered from Radio Topics some time ago, thai the Government was to subsidise £ls per week to each of the four stations. And; why' only £ls for the Auckland station,: which has been going for two years on approximately 200 watts, while the Christeharch station, which has only just started and is on two fly power, is granted tbr same amount, Now what about some information re the Broadcasting Company. Tho Amateur Association doesn't seem to know anything, while the dealers don't appear to be over-informed and the Pc*st Office won't tell. So we are no further on in spite of the fact that we have all paid our thirty bobs. J. C. NICHOL. Auckland, September 16.

Sir,—Allow me to add my feeble protest to that of my fellow-sufferers with regard to the present state of affairs in the New Zealand radio world. As to tho interruptions from the commercial station, YLD, I can say no more than your previous correspondents—that is "the sooner it is changed the better. I am stire that we are all very grateful to the various artists who have been, giving* their- services at IYA, but nevertheless, the i programmes are not of the highest standard, and &re not what we expect for our increased license fee of 30s per year. I think that the suggestion put forward by " Peeved" that the' present licenses be extended is one worthy of some consideration. The l'eetnreß .which have become, regular items on the programmes should, I think be subject to a time limit of abont 20 minutes. Speakers of late-seem to have got the idea, that the broadcasting, station is a Medium through which: they may debate the merits of their various medical beliefs. This may be interesting to the Serson of a highly, scientific turn of mind,' ut to the average listener whose scientific knowledge is confined to his radio set, it is rather " highbrow." Let there be lectures by all means, but let them be not ted long, of interest to the general public, and not simply a flow of long scientific words. Noh Lijiet.
