IMPRISONED IN LIFT.
MAYOR AND TOWN CLERK. INCIDENT IN CHRISTCHURCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN con RESPONDENT.] CHPJSTCHURCH, Saturday. Calls of distress shattered the big silences of the interior of the municipal chambers last night at about nine o'clock, and the custodian and a caller who were standing at the main entrance rushed into tho building to discover what was in progress. It was ascertained that the vocal clamour was proceeding from the/ lift cage which, like Mahomet's coffin, was held suspended between the two regions with no outlet to either, Within tho cage wero the Mayor, Rev. J. K. Archer, and the town clerk, Mi'. J. S. Neville. They were descending from the first floor to the ground floor when the winding apparatus stopped and tho cago could not be moved again either up or down. Electricians were summoned, and it was finally discovered that a dirty contact was responsible for tho failure of the gear. The fault was remedied, the cage was lowered to earth, and tho two "prisoners" wero released. ,
