[BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. The tracks at Trentham dried up very well for thi3 morning's worK and the weather at the coiuso was much warmer than in the city. There were a few fast gallops, mostly by horses ongaged at tho Otaki and Levin meetings. The winter grass track was in general use. Panorama and Paula sprinted half a mile in 56 3-ss, both being under a pull, Tunadees ealloped a mile, accompanied by Eonmark over the last seven furlongs. Ho went slowly over the first furling, t'nd ran the full distance in lm 495, tho first half mile taking 50s. Bezau was too good for Star Shell in a gailop over six furlongs, which took him lm 20s. Kuhio pleased by covering six furlongs by himself in lm 19s. Ho i 3 coming- to hand well. Modern peared to bo much too good.for Bright Eyes in a six furlong gallop, which occupied lm 203. Black Rod, Minotaus and Royal Head sprintod half a mile up tho back in 40s. Debate, with a good weight up, had Sottano well beaten at the end of seven furlongs run in lm 32 2-ss—-a good gallop. Salarnia, picked up by Mutu at the end of a furlong, was two lenirths to the bad at the winning post. The full distance was run in lm 31 l-ss, and tho last six furlongs in lm 20 4-ss. A. Quinlivac gave Mr. Eric Riddiford's two imported fillies steady work. They are developing into handsome horses, and if looks go for anything should bo smart gallopers. The Hawke's Bay steeplechaser, _ Black Art, was shipped to Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday. The ex-New Zealand horseman. W. O'Halloran, cabled for the riding of Black Art. but it is improbable that a rider will bo engaged till the horse has reached Sydney. Black Art is engaged in the Australian Hurdle Race and the, Australian Steeplechase. Tho hurdle race is run on June S and tho steeplechase five days later. Black Art has been allotted 9.7 in tho firstnamed event, a.nd 10.0 in the latter. It is reported that Rowley has been purchased by Mr, A. McDonald, of Masterton, and that he has already gono into R. K Bagby's stable at Masterton. Imperial Spark, who was given top weight in the Raukawa Cup at Otaki, is a very useful sort, and on his latest performances he is worthy of support next time he starts. Ho ran a first and a third at Hawera and two seconds at Wanganui. Mr. Herbct Gaisford will not be at Otaki to see Kilfira run,- but lie expects the Kilboy gelding to go woli if started in the big races there. Carawock is back at Trentham, and will bo an absentee from Ellerslio. He disappointed his owner at Wanganui, where hd showed a lot of pace on the fiat, but jumped without any confidence. This want of confidence suggests that he has not yet forgotten a heavy fall he received last season. He may be sent to Hastings to be schooled and probably will.race at the Napier Park and Hastings meetings. Fool's Paradise wound tip bk season with a highly creditable win, scoring at Wanganui after receiving a very bad run. Hp has been brought back to Trentham, and will be put aside for the winter. Eonrm.rk ran so well at Wanganui, where he ran a good third after trying xo win from end to end, that there will bo no lack of support for him in h's Otaki and Levin engagements. NOTES FROM CANTERBURY. H. GRAY'S DISQUALIFICATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The disqualification of Hector Gray by tho Canterbury - District Committee .created quito a sensation. The alleged incident connepted with the case being associated with a race at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring meeting in November last, comment has been made on the long delay ill trying the case. I learn, however, that it wa3 only recently that tho corroborative evidence deemed necessary becama available. It is understood that Gray is appealing' to tho Racing. Conference, so that tho subject may be left hero at present. R. 3'. Mason is on hw way to Sydney with the three-year-old Haze and the two-year-old Lucenda, who are to be got ready for Spring racing. Hazo has been a most unlucky horse, finishing tho season with six seconds on end, but he should break the Bpell soon as he is a good sort and a stayer. Lucenda has not raced, but, being by Martian irojn the New Zealand Cup winner, Lady Lucy, she is bred on staying lines. She is engaged in the Australian Jockey Club's Derby. J. J. Pine has taken over Mr. G. Gerard's horsee. His team consists of Lucinette, Mariis, Cyrene, Victory Bond and the yearling colts by Paper Money—Kilteel and Archery-Peace. The Polytnnian will be added shortly. • Riccarton stables will be represented by about twenty horses at the Dunedin meeting. Moorland, Sunny Loch, Enare, Jubilant and Gay Juliet are a few who have done good track work lately. Charlatan lias had a short spell, following on a dose of physic, and T. H. Gillett hopes to have him in commission' again in a few days. The present intention is to give the steeplechaser his next race over country at Motukarara or Ashburton next month, after which he may compete at Trentham and then at the Grand National meeting. < W. G. Hobbs has had to eaee Bon Avie and tho brother to Scion, both theso two-year-olds being amiss. Cash man has been shaping well m his education an a steeplechaser, but another West Coaster, Lord Ashlea, has performed palchily in his schooling .efforts. Royal Despatch, who earned considerable notoriety in Australia nt the beginning of this season, lias been in regular work at Riccarton for some time. So far his tasks have been of a light order, but he is coining on nicely, and he should be in good trim for spring racing. The most pleasing thing about him in that he appears to have got over his waywardness and he now goes very quietly in his work. Rich Prize, has made his reappearance on the tracks. He appears to have made a good reco/ery from the trouble that compelled him to forfeit his engagements at the South Canterbury meeting at the beginning of this month. Red Wink has been nominated for tho Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps, to be decided at the Spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. Castellan is to be tried as a htirdler. He has had a lurn over the pony hurdles at Riccarton and looks as if he would shape all right when tried over tho bigger obstacles. Tigerland :is going on nicely in his work nt present. He appears to he quite sound, and if he continues to progress satisfactorily ho may get some money in steeplechases later in the winter. Merry Lad, who had to _bo destroyed recently as a result of breaking a leg, was a useful steeple-chaser in his day. His great asset v. as his jumping, which got him in'o the prize money on more than one occasion in good cross-country company, at Riccarton.
