[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The committee of tho Metropolitan Trotting Club has como in for a good deal of criticism concerning its decision to make this year's New Zealand Trotting Cup for horses who have done better than 4m 30s. For tho last two years it has been 4.30 or better, so it is tightened up only a fifth of a second, a change that cuts out£ only Don Wild and Logan Lou, each of 'whom has a 4.30 record. The popular view is that the conditions will result in a fleld much too large for ideal racing. Tho Auckland pacers, Hypo. Darknite and Nipper, have arrived for the Canterbury Park and Ashburton. Meetings, while the Palmerston North pair, N e l sort -Derby and Nelson Fame, have put in .an appearance with a similar programme ill; view. 1 hey are all well, Nelson . Derby Ul particular having made many friends. Sheik is in good fettle. He is unlikely to race at Canterbury Park, bui he may. be a starter in the Free-for-all at Ashburton. Realm has done little more than. jogging work lately, but it seems to agree with liim, as lie looks wonderfully well. . Pearlie Chimes has been working well lately and she is being picked out as likely to win a two-mile race very soon. Marvin Drift, who is now being trained by T G. Fox at Addington, is getting through solid work. Ho only needs to become solid to win good races as he is a fine trotter. Onyx looks in the best of condition and she paced attractively when taken to Ad dington lor a work-out this week. Lady Joan has been responsible for some good work lately, and what is of niore importance, she has become much quieter. Delavan Quest is very well at present. He does not seem at home over tho Ust part of a solid two-mile journey. Acron is improving fast, and ho; , P ac , e . c | in great style over a mile and a-half this week He should soon be at the top ol his form, and in the meantime his manners are of the best. The champion trotting mare Reta Peter, is back at Addington under the care of A. Cox who taught her the rudiments of her business. She appears to bo quite sound, hut she has done no fast work jet. Rosethorne, the two-year-old sisterto Great Hope, has dono a lot of useful wo.k at New Brighton. She will be a starter in the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton, and though she may not bo cjuite good enough she will do well later. I hear good accounts of the two-year-old, by Man o' War from Bright Alice, who wiu represent J. Bryce's stable in the Sapling Stakes at Ashljurton. Bryco has . won the classic race three years in succession—Ahuriri, Taurekareka and Kohara being the horses that scored in his hands, so that anything he steps out is entitled to respect.
