NATIONAL COUNCIL.

The annual meeting of tho Auckland branch of the National Council of Women was held in tho luncheon room of tho Lyceum Club on Monday evening. Dr. Hilda Northcroft, who presided, extended a very warm welcome to the Mayoress, Mrs. Baildon, and to, Lady Gunson, who has become an honorary member. The annual report, which has been published previously, was read, and appreciation was expressed of the. work of Miss S. E. Jackson, the lion, secretary, who is retiring, and also of Miss Cox, the treasurer. In speaking of the objects of the national council, Dr. Northcroft said that it was representative of the affiliated women's societies, which would mean approximately 7000 women. It was due to the influence of the national council, said the president, that safety rails had been placed before schools in order to prevent children running out in front of passing motor-cars. Stress was laid upon the influence that an organised body of women could wield in a community. A vote of sympathy with Mrs. Massey and the family of the late Prime Minister was passed during the evening. A remit proposing that the Government be asked to amend the application for enrolment papers, so that women's professions and occupations be stated in the same manner as men's was considered by the national council. The following officers were elected for the forthcoming year:—President, Dr. Hilda Northcroft (unopposed); vice-presidents, Miss' Jackson, Mrs. Cook, Miss Basten, Miss Carnachan, Adjutant Gordon and Sister Hannah"; representatives on Dominion Committee, Mrs. B. Cadoux, Mrs. Kidd, Dr. Montgomery. Miss A. Hasten, Miss B. Carnachan, Miss S. E. Jackson, Miss Melville, Miss Newbegin, Miss Flatt, Sister Hannah and Adjutant Gordon; lion, secretory, Mrs. Cadoux; lion, treasurer. Miss Cox.
