INVENTIONS.
Woman as an inventor is makiiSff rapid •strides. Quite naturally she is turning her ingenuity to.tho solving of of the housewife's problems. But, while concerning herself largely with the improvement of domestic appliances, she has also invaded the field of general utility inventions. Prompted, no doubt, by the abnormally wet year in England and its discomforts in crowded streets, a woman has invented a transparent umbrella to enable a person to see where ho is walking. Vexatious "collisions" should soon be but a memory of the past when this invention is on the market. On the " domestic" side may be mentioned a device whereby the heat generated m boiling water in kettles and saucepans can bo utilised for cooking different articles while the water is kept cjuito clean. Hero are somo more women's inventions during tlio year:—lnterchangeable scissor blades, so that the scissors may bo used for heavy tailoring or making buttonholes. A musical apparatus whereby a pianist can play half a dozen "jazz instruments without interfering with the normal playinc; of the piano. A clothes lino which opens out liko an umbrella, and can be folded into a small space. A portable bathing tent, in which the owner acts as the polo bv standing upright, while the tent extends outwards to the ground, enabling the owner to dress and undress in comfort without having to carry a heavy tent about. Several chemical wireless electrical and mechanical appliances have also been invented by women.
