MISSION BAY PROPOSAL. DEFEATED BY FOUR VOTES.] THREE-FIFTHS MAJORITY NEEDEt>i The poll taken yesterday in the Tamaki Road district on a proposal to raise loan of £20,000 for the purpose of chasing and laying out as a reserve 23g acres of the Melanesian Mission Tru.-ti Board property at Mission Bay (Flying School Bay) was lost by four votes. The Trust Board had already set asidd ten acres of this property, representing a* strip for the full extent of the admirably beach, as a public reserve, but th® Tamaki Road Board, realising thai tha district would in time be closely settled, was of the opinion that to meet the rex quirements of the future and to enable ti:a public io take full advantage c.f the waterfront, it was desirable to secure 4 larger area, and decided to submit pro* posals for the purchase of an additional 23£ acres, to the ratepayers. The poll opened at 9 a.m. yesterday, and when the votes were counted losti evening it was seen that 277 votes bacs been recorded in favour of the proposal and 191 against it. As a throe-fifths majority of the total votes polled was re« quired to carry the proposal, the poll wa3 declared lost. There were approximately 800 name.* on the roll, representing about 1000 votes.. The franchise provided that persons owning property to the value of £IOOO were entitled io one vote, those possessing property valued at over £IOOO and no 9 over £2OOO, two rotes, and those withi property valued at over £2OOO, threa votes. Commenting on the defeat, of the loaa proposal at an early hour this morning, Mr. M. G. McArthur, chairman of th* Tamaki Road Board, stated he was | greatly disappointed with the result o| the poll. " I feel thai it is a greater Jos3 to the city than it is to our own district," he said. Asked if it was tha intention of tha board to take another poll, Mr. McArthmf said that at the present time it was uncer* tain what they would do.
