RETAIL SUGAR PRICES.

REDUCTION! IN THE RATES. CALCULATION OF SAVINGS, j In consequence of the reduced wholesales prices of sugar, the Auckland Grocers' Association has reduced the retail price to 34d per lb. for small quantities and 18s 3d cash for 701b. bags. The nev! prices will take effect from Monday. It is estimated the average household uses about 61b. of sugar a week and on this basis some interesting calculation! may be made of savings to consumers through the recent reductions in pricev The present prices are 3£d per lb., or 19s 3d a 701b. bag, so that for an average household the reduction will amount to the small Bum of l£d a week, or 7s 4d a year. In May of last year, however*, the prices for sugar were 4JcI a lb. fot small quantities and 23s 3d lor 701 b, bags, so that in nine months the reductions have amounted to l|d a lb,, or 5* ou a 701b. bag. It follows therefore thai the average family has benefited to th« extent of 7Ad a week during ituis period. This represents a saving of SSfa 6d ov«| a period of 12 months. Sucu a familj would, of course, pay less for its sugal than those buying in small quantities, bu? strange to say it would benefit to & less extent by recent reductions in pries. l ;. Foi instance, the saving per year for a familj buying 70!b. bags owing to the coming into force ou Monday worn 4 amount to only 4s 6d compared with 7} 4d for other families. The reductions fot the past nine mouths would in their cas« represent a saving pev year «f 22s frj compared with 32s 6d. In all these calculations must be mado for the fact that this the jam-making and preserving when more than the average amount oj sugar is used. For some time to mni the weekly' savings'will be greater those shown above.
