PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

THE SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES. The meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was presided over by the Rev. P. S. Smallficld. The secretary reported that 53 cases had been attended to by the office in the Women and Children department. Of these 19 were connected with troubles between husbands and wives, and 14 concerned children. Seven old cases were dealt with; Eleven cases were taken to Court, orders *,oing made in eight and the rest adjourned. The inspector had made 25 visits to homes and procured 18 witnesses in connection with 43 cases- He had spent five half-days in Court. The inspector of the animal department reported he had given 19 cautions in cases of animals neglected or ill-used. One case was taken to Court and a fine imposed, while three animals were humanely destroyed. The inspector had attended at the races on seven- days, and visited (Country districts, and inspected excavations and tips. The chairman informed members that the Governor-General, Sir Chas. Fergusson, had consented to act as patron of the society. Mrs. Simpson, of Remucra, an accredited representative of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, was elected a vice-president, and the Annual Essay Competition will be held as usual. It was resolved to write to the Mayor and other prominent citizens in tho principal Waikato towns, arid Whangarei with regard to the extension of the society's operations to those districts.
