The United States Census Bureau announces that deaths from poisoning through drinking illicit liquor have been remarkably few. The mortality statistics show that drinkers of these beverages who have died owed their deaths to plain alcoholism.. In New York City there were ten deaths from drinking wood alcohol in 1910, and 14 in 1922. Deaths from alcoholism in those periods respectively were 621 and 226. The death rate due to alcoholism in the United States in 1922 was 26.10 per 100,000 of population, and in 1923 it was 32.10. Before prohibition deaths from that cause were at the rate of 56.10 per 100,000 of population. Deaths in New York from wood alcohol poisoning in 1919 totalled 38; in 1920, 29; and in 1921, 14. Deaths from alcohohsrn in those years were 176, 98, and 119 respectively. The Prohibition Enforcement Bureau announces that 35 Federal prohibition agents have been killed in the performance of their duty since the enforcement of the law began.
